Why Technical Standards Matter
A technical standard is an agreed way of doing something, from the size of a sheet of paper to the shape of a shipping container or the grammar of a web page. Standards let products from different makers work together, which is why a USB drive from Tokyo fits a laptop from Texas.
They also encode safety knowledge, from hospital electronics to toy testing. Without shared standards every purchase would be a compatibility gamble and global trade would grind to a halt.
