About EAN and UPC
The retail barcodes first scanned on a pack of Wrigley gum in Troy, Ohio in June 1974. The Universal Product Code was chosen by the US grocery industry in 1973 and the 13 digit European Article Number followed in 1977. Now managed by GS1, they identify products at checkouts around the world.
