Phase Alternating Line, developed by Walter Bruch at Telefunken and patented in 1962, improved on NTSC color stability using 625 lines at 50 fields per second. Broadcasts began in the United Kingdom and West Germany in 1967, and it spread across Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia before digital switchover in the 2000s and 2010s.
