About CD-DA Red Book
The Sony and Philips specification for audio compact discs, issued as the Red Book in 1980 and later published as IEC 60908. It fixed 44,100 hertz sampling and 16 bit stereo, about 74 minutes per disc. The first albums and players shipped in 1982, and the CD became the dominant music format of the 1990s.
